There is something special about Don’t Starve. A constant through the years of Don’t Starve has been that people don’t just want to conquer the world of Don’t Starve they want to do it together. In online mode, the game awards the player with badges based on performance. The game added a multiplayer mode, called 'online', in which anywhere from two to five players can play a level together, with the person with the highest score winning. Additionally, the game includes a practice mode that allows the player to alter the song's speed, or start playing it from any point in time, and not just the beginning. Since its early access stages, the game included a single-player mode as well as a party mode, which features a leaderboard with the player's names, which are entered after each song is played. After the lead slice, there are a number of smaller "slices" which can be cut. One new mechanic features a new block called a Chain, which starts with a "slice" which indicates which direction to cut. Since the addition of Original Soundtrack (OST) 5, two new mechanics were introduced to the game. If you achieve so many notes hit correctly in a row your score on every note is multiplied by 8, giving you a much higher score. If you slice the notes correctly, you can create a combo which gives you more points. You can choose a setting known as 'No Fail' in which you may keep playing the level even after your energy has been depleted. If the bar becomes completely empty, the level will end. If the player completely misses a note, the bar will lose a larger amount. If the player hits any note in the incorrect direction, this 'energy bar' will decrease by a small bit. Underneath the path where the blocks travel is a white bar that slowly fills up as the player hits notes correctly. ![]() In addition, there are sometimes bombs that the player should not hit, and obstacles in the form of oncoming walls that the player's head should avoid. In other words, the heat times decreased in proportion to the surface area decrease. As you can see, the air barriers had a distinct, and virtually linear effect on the car’s performance. In addition, Figure 2 shows a plot of the front surface area of the car versus the performance. The results of the experiment are shown in the table below. All factors other than the air barriers were unchanged. This process was repeated 10 times, with all heat times captured by an accurate timer. The car was raced once without a air barrier, then with the small barrier, and finally with the large barrier. The car is 3/4 inch high, but can be equipped with a small air barrier which brings the height at the front of the car to 1-1/4 inches (same as raw BSA block), or with a large air barrier which brings the height to 1-3/4 inches (see Figure 1). In order to measure the effect of aerodynamics, I used a test car (previously described in Volume 3, Issue 6). Or can it?īut then I reviewed some (unpublished) testing done by Michael Lastufka and found that a distinct aerodynamic effect was measured. Certainly, air flow can’t slow down a car running at 10 MPH. This conclusion was drawn from reading several booklets (including speed tip booklets for sale over the internet), from comments made on web sites (e.g., “I’ll prove that aerodynamics play no part by running a plain block of wood in a race”), and from observing that the maximum speed of a pinewood derby car is only about 10 MPH. I have always believed that the effect of air flow over a moving pinewood derby car was slight to none. If so, what steps can be taken to minimize the effect?
